Established in 1995 at Chinese Cultural Centre of Scarborough (non-profit organization), Smart Abacus has branched out in 1997 working closely with School Boards' after school program agent. The centre offers a variety of after school programs at York Region public schools and Montessori schools for children age 4 to 18.
Besides offering extra curricular courses, we are an approved abacus centre by the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce, the only world recognized abacus examination and certification centre. We are proud to be appointed by the TCOC as North America examination centre to offer professional abacus open examinations and certification.
We have over 10 years experience in summer camps and after school programs.
List of Programs:
English - Gr. 1 – 8
Based on Ontario English syllabus, our centre has developed course materials emphasizing grammar, creative writing, reading comprehension and oral communication.
Creative Writing - Gr. 1 – 12
This course is designed for beginner writers to Grade 12 advanced students with emphasis on proper sentence structure, grammar, analytical ability, materials organization and creative writing skill.
Math - Gr. 1 – 11
This course emphasizes problem solving strategies and basic Math concepts. Course materials are based on the Ontario School curriculum and Hong Kong Textbooks.
Math - Gr. 12
We offer Geometry & Algebra, Calculus and Data Management for Gr. 12 students. The courses emphasize problem solving strategies and Math concepts. Course materials are based on the New Grade 12 curriculum.
Private Tutor
Private tutoring for English or Math subjects from Gr. 1 & up
Homework Club - Gr. 1 – 8
Homework help from students’ day school work at $ 10.00 per hour & up.
French Beg. / Int.
This program is expected to stimulate in students the desire to continue to enhance their ability to use French. It aims to cultivate these aspirations by providing a solid foundation on which students can build throughout their lives.
Abacus - Beg. to Master level 12 – 1
Improve basic Math skills, concentration, alertness and memory power. Cultivate self-confidence; improve mental calculating ability through abacus imaging technique
Arts Class 4 yrs old & up
This course covers basic drawing, cartoon & water coloring techniques. (individual progress attention)
Mandarin Conversation - 6 yrs old & up
Course emphasizes mostly on conversation and recognizing Chinese characters for children.
Badminton - 8 yrs old & up
Learn all the basic techniques by experienced Badminton coaches – rules, strategy and team competition
Dance
Standard, Latin, Salsa, Hustle, Swing, Argentina Tango, Line Dance, Hip Hop, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Aerobics.
Camps:
1. BASIC CAMP
Fun filled academic camp includes daily Math, English program. Also includes Science, Arts & crafts, Sports, Games, French, unique workshops like cooking, drama, dance, karate or hip hop etc.
2. MINI SCIENCE CAMP
• Campers will be able to explore on many science display at Ontario Science Centre.
• Hand on materials will be given and taught by Science teachers.
3. ABACUS CAMP
This abacus camp is an intensive training for beginner Smart Abacus students to improve basic Math skills, concentration, alertness and memory power. Cultivate self-confidance, improve mental calculating ability through imaging technique
4. SUMMER PREP CLASSES
This is a good program for students who would like to brush up or to prepare in advance to improve their academic levels, but do not wish to attend a full day camp.
5. LEADERSHIP TRAINING CAMP (FREE)
Summer leadership and teamwork program for youth (gr. 11 to gr. 12)
• Leadership camp includes training seminars, volunteer credits, recognition picnic, parties and certification etc.
• Limited spaces for successful applicants only.
6. PRE-SCHOOL CAMP Ages: 3 and up
