Canadian Opera Company (COC) community programs run year round and offer exciting opera experiences to children, youth, community groups, camps, and community centres.
After School Opera Program The COC runs after school programs in four different communities across Toronto to provide children with creative after-school activities. Each location runs a session one day each week from 4 to 6 p.m. Program Leader engages children in grades 3 to 7 in dynamic activities, with an emphasis on music and drama. Each term includes a guest artist workshop. Past workshops have included costume design, mime, stage make-up, creative movement and stage combat. Participants perform an original operatic work that is created by the program leader and is based on participants’ ideas and improvisations. This program runs for three 10-week terms for up to 25 children in each neighbourhood. At the end of each term, family and friends are invited to attend a short performance by the participants
Saturday Morning Opera Club The Saturday Morning Opera Club is a music and opera program based on the Orff technique of teaching music. Led by an inspired teacher who is also a singer and an Orff specialist, this unique course combines stories and characters of opera with creative music making.
