The Shevchenko School of Performing Arts was founded in 1996 to offer instruction for children aged 4-16 in music and dance. The School offers not only instructional classes but provides students the opportunity to experience the thrill of live performance with the presentation of their own concerts and performances with the Shevchenko Musical Ensemble. We offer ballet, character, Ukrainian folk and acrobatic dance.
A major feature of the curriculum in the Shevchenko School of Dance is the presentation of stage productions choreographed for the students by Dance Director Andrei Pendik. Each production is complete with elaborate costuming, sets and lighting, and productions are often performed to the musical accompaniment of the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra under Artistic Director Alexander Veprinsky.
The first production was Prokofiev's delightful children's classic Peter and the Wolf, which was performed eight times for different audiences. This was followed by Thumbelina by Ukrainian composer Zhanna Kolodub. Polovetsian Dances was based on Borodin's opera Prince Igor, and The Snow Queen told the story of Hans Christian Anderson's fairytale. Outstanding ballets were Night on Bald Mountain and Pictures at an Exhibition, both to the music of Mussorgsky, and most recently Lets Dance the Tango!, based on music by Shostakovich. Each production is complete with elaborate costuming, sets and lighting. Pure theatre!
School of Music develops an appreciation for both Ukrainian culture and music in general
