Description: |
YMCA in Canada, the YMCA of London has a long and rich history of service and deep roots in the London community. From providing physical fitness services in 1890, opening the Queen’s and Wellington branch in 1896, buying Camp Queen Elizabeth for “a buck and a bible” in 1954, expanding service with the Bob Hayward Branch in 1963, and moving in 1983 to a new downtown Centre Branch on Waterloo after fire destroyed the old facility, the Y has progressed and kept pace with a growing and dynamic community. We now operate 15 child care facilities throughout London, St. Thomas, Strathroy and Woodstock. We assumed operations for the Children’s Safety Village where we provide enhanced programming through synergy with our Camping and Outdoor Education programs for children and youth. In 2005 we offered 14 classes in 5 locations for Language Instruction to Newcomers (LINC) to our country and in 2005, in partnership with the London Public Library, we opened both a Child Care Centre and a Health, Fitness and Recreation Centre with the new East London Library Branch.
The face of the YMCA has evolved through its changing membership and programming, but the mission of the Y “to provide opportunities for personal growth in spirit, mind, and body for all people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and abilities” has remained an enduring foundation and focal point for this charitable organization.
This year the YMCA of London will celebrate 150 years of stalwart service to London and the community at large. Keep watching our website as our celebratory plans unfold.
